There was a time when Iranians listened to ex-pat pop singers from LA. But now with so much talent coming out of Iran, those days are long gone. And while those pop songs are fun and nostalgic in their own way, it’s refreshing to see multi-talented musicians and bands fusing traditional and modern sounds set to the brilliant and meaningful lyrics of Iran’s greatest poets. One such band is Pallett, whose song From Eastern Lands contains lyrics from the great Sa’adi as well as original lyrics by singer Omid Nemati. This is one of my favorite songs off of their album Mr. Violet. Let’s look at the lyrics and translation of From Eastern Lands by Pallett.
Part 1
to râ nâdidane mâ gham nabâshad / you don’t miss me if you don’t see me
ke dar kheylat be az mâ kam nabâshad / for there are many like me in your world
man az daste to dar âlam naham ruy / I’d search the entire universe for [someone like] you
valikan chon to dar âlam nabâshad / but there is none like you
(repeat part 1)
to bâ nâz, be sad râz / you, with coyness and a hundred mysteries
koni andar saram sad gheseh âghâz / leave me with a thousand tales in my head
koni andar saram sad gheseh âghâz / leave me with a thousand tales in my head
man ân morgh / I’m that bird
man ân bâz / I’m that falcon
konam andar havâyat bâl o parvâz / soaring in your thoughts and mysterious air
konam andar havâyat bâl o parvâz / soaring in your thoughts and mysterious air
Part 2
biyâ bâre safar bandim az in dasht / let’s leave this land
zemestun bâz tuye in khuneh bargasht / for winter has returned to this home again
biyâ tâ ghesehâ guyam barâyat / stay and let me tell you my stories
ke dorune jodâyi dir bogzasht / because the loneliness has lasted far too long
(repeat part 2)
