As a language teacher, I always encourage my students to listen to music to not only see grammar in use but also help improve their pronunciation. Music is a wonder for language learning. So today’s song is the Persian lyrics and translation of Dang Show, the name of the band and song. I admit may not be the best song to help with Persian grammar-wise, but it spectacularly illustrates the depth of Persian poetry and the immense beauty of the language. And the tombak beats are just plain awesome!
The ensemble Dang Show creates a masterful mix of wind, string, piano, and traditional Iranian percussion instruments. I often hear their album Otâghe Gooshvâre (The Earring Room) played in book stores and cafes throughout Tehran. This first song off the album is set to the brilliant lyrics of Mowlana’s poems (better known as Rumi in the west). So given that fact, my translation is a very rough one and more of an insight into my humble understanding of the meaning. Of course Rumi’s meaning goes much deeper than I can possibly comprehend, but I must say that I’ve enjoyed this song a million times more since understanding it a little better.
Just one more note: I should attempt to explain the meaning of dang: it’s essentially “to become unconscious or crazy due to an intense feeling of love”. So dang sho means “become dang”. Hope you enjoy.
