It’s been a while since I’ve written a Music + Lyrics post. This one comes from Marjan Farsad whose lyrics are beautiful in their simplicity (not to mention quite conducive to Persian language learning). Hope you enjoy the lyrics and translation of Khuneye Ma by Marjan Farsad.
khuneye mâ dure dure* / our home is far, far away
poshte kuhâye sabure / behind the patient mountains
poshte dasht hâye talâyi / behind the golden plains
poshte sahrâ hâye khâli / behind the empty deserts
khunye mâst unvare âb / it’s our home, beyond the waters
unvare mojâye bitâb / beyond the restless waves
poshte jangal hâye sarve / behind the cypress forests
tuye royâst, tuye ye khâb / in an fantasy, in a dream
poshte oghyânuse âbi / behind the blue ocean
poshte bâghâye golâbi / behind the pear orchards
unvare bâghâye angur / beyond the vineyards
poshte kandu hâye zanbur / behind the beehives
khuneye mâ poshte abrâst / our home is behind the clouds
unvare deltangiye mâst / beyond our melancholy
tahe jâde hâye khise / at the end of wet paths
poshte bârun, poshte daryâst / behind the rain, behind the sea
khuneye mâ ghesse dâreh / our home has tales
âlbâloo o pesteh dâreh / it has sour cherries and pistachios
poshte khandehâye garmesh / behind the warm smiles
âdamâye khaste dâreh / it has weary people
khuneye mâ shâdi dâreh / our home has joy
tuye howzâsh* mâhi dâreh / it has fish in its pools
kuchehâsh tup bâzi dâreh / its streets have ball playing
gorbehâye nâzi dâreh / it has cute cats
khuneye mâ garm o samimi / our home is warm and intimate
ru divârâsh aksâye ghadimi / on the walls, old pictures
akse bâzi tuye eyvun / pictures of playing on the porch
labe daryâ tu tâbestun / at the beach in the summer
akse un ruz zire bârun / a picture of that day under the rain
bâ ye boghz o ye chamedun / with a lump in the throat and a suitcase
raftan az pishe âdamâye / parting from people
nâzanin o mehrabun / so lovely and kind
khuneye mâ dure dure / our home is far, far away
poshte kuhâye sabure / behind the patient mountains
poshte dasht hâye talâyi / behind the golden plains
poshte sahrâ hâye khâli / behind the empty deserts
khuneye mâst unvare âb / it’s our home, beyond the waters
unvare mojâye bitâb / beyond the restless waves
poshte jangal hâye sarve / behind the cypress forests
tuye royâst, tuye ye khâb / in an fantasy, in a dream
Grammatical and cultural notes
*The first line of this song uses dure dure. Reduplication in Persian is very common, and this is one of its many forms. Connecting the same adjective with an ezâfeh (the e sound at the end) emphasizes the adjective. For example, you could say:
Âsh dâgh-e dâghe. (The soup is very hot.)
Ino bokhor, khonak-e khonak mishi. (Drink this and you’ll become very cool [you’ll cool off].)
Person A: Hâlet behtar shod? (Are you feeling better?)
Person B: Khub-e khub shodam. (I’m all better/excellent.)
*Howz is a small, shallow pool in the courtyard of old, traditional houses. They often have fish and symbolize brightness and life. Howz and fish (and moonlight reflecting in the howz) are common themes in Persian poetry and songs. You can find this theme in Hojjat Ashrafzadeh’s heartbreakingly beautiful Mâh o Mâhi.
