Iranian songs do this funny thing. In the beginning (and/or sometimes end), there’s a voice that comes on and kind of whispers the name of the singer. I don’t know how else to describe it, but either you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about or you won’t. Either way, this was always a curious phenomenon for me until I learned that a lot of singers do it because they just release a song first with no album in mind and so that’s how you learn who the singer is.

When I was in Kish, I couldn’t go anywhere without hearing this one song. And there was no whispering voice to tell me who the singer was. I asked my cousin if she knew, but she didn’t. Then one ordinary Saturday morning, I was in a Snapp on my way to class when it came on again. I peeked over at the driver’s stereo and saw the name ‘Hojat Ashrafzadeh’ and ‘Bi khabar az to’ flash across the screen. I had finally gotten to the bottom of it! After Mâh o Mâhi which was so heart-wrenchingly beautiful that sometimes I can’t even stand to listen to it, I was looking forward to his next hit.

I still hear this song seemingly everywhere, even from my annoyingly loud upstairs neighbors who feel compelled to blast it from time to time. Only when they play this song, I don’t get annoyed. I just sway my head, do a little wrist twirl, and sing along. I hope you like this song, too. Here are the lyrics and English translation of Bi Khabar Az To by Hojat Ashrafzadeh.

bi khabaram az to / I haven’t heard from you

o man tâb nadâram / and I can’t stand it anymore

bade to khod râ be ke bâyad besepâram / after you, who should I entrust myself to

az del-e man kam nashode mehr-e to mâham / my love for you hasn’t become less, my moon

delbar-e man gheyre to del yâr nakhâham / sweetheart, I don’t want anyone else

mast o kharâbe atr-e gisooy-e toam / I’m drunk and crazy about the scent of your hair

âsheghe tâb o gereh-e muy-e toam / I’m in love with the curls of your hair

rafti o yek ruz delam band nashod / you left and I haven’t been ok for even a day

bade to in boghz ke labkhand nashod / after you this lump in my throat never became a smile

(x2)

joz to nadâram be khodâ yâre azizi / I have no love other than you, I swear

tâ key az in âshegh-e tanhâ begorizi / how long are you going to run away from this lonely lover

bâz agar sar be biyâbân begozâram / even if I find myself in the desert again

eshgh-e man amâ gele-i az to nadâram / but my love I have no complaints about you

mast o kharâbe atr-e gisooy-e toam / I’m drunk and crazy about the scent of your hair

âsheghe tâb o gereh-e muy-e toam / I’m in love with the curls of your hair

rafti o yek ruz delam band nashod / you left and I haven’t been ok for even a day

bade to in boghz ke labkhand nashod / after you this lump in my throat never became a smile

(x2)

mano bebakhsh ke dooset dâram / forgive me for loving you

mano bebaksh ke rafti o zendeh mundam bi to / forgive me for staying alive after you left
